In a break with recent history where Ashes Series were held approximately biennially, this series is being held only three months after the end of the 2013 Ashes in England. This was done to avoid the fact that every Ashes series in Australia since 1999 had been held immediately before a Cricket World Cup. Following the 2015 series, The Ashes will continue at its normal intervals.
On 17 December 2013 Australia regained the Ashes for the first time in seven years by winning the Perth Test at the WACA by 150 runs and taking an unassailable 3–0 lead in the series.
